Training With Intention: Project Overview

Training with Intention is designed to assist public health professionals in using CDC Quality Training Standards as a guide for effectively developing trainings.

Project Overview

As lead designer and developer of the Training With Intention series, I created one of the first public health training programs aimed not at content delivery, but at improving how training itself is designed. Originally launched as a Project ECHO series and later expanded into a national eLearning course through NNPHI, this initiative was built to help highly skilled public health professionals translate their deep knowledge into engaging, accessible learning experiences.

Developed in collaboration with the CDC and subject matter experts across the country, the series uses the CDC’s Quality Training Standards as a foundation. Each module highlights one of the standards, brought to life by experts who had used them in real-world contexts. The ECHO sessions featured interactive case studies submitted by learners, while the eLearning version added multimedia, knowledge checks, and opportunities for reflection. Across both formats, the training emphasized intentionality, clarity, and equity in training design — hence the name.

I served as the unifying force across stakeholders, managing the needs of CDC, NNPHI, and diverse contributors. My role included content strategy, instructional design, stakeholder negotiation, and quality assurance. I also ensured the series remained true to its vision while aligning with federal standards and branding requirements.

This work filled a critical gap in the public health field — offering a practical, scalable framework for anyone tasked with training others but lacking formal instructional design experience. Especially in times of crisis like the COVID-19 pandemic, it has provided essential guidance to specialists suddenly thrust into the role of educator.
